ISLAMIZATION OF DISCOURSE ANALYSIS

ISLAMIZATION OF DISCOURSE ANALYSIS

Dear readers,
As we know, language plays an important role in our life. We acquire language since we were young and many try to learn other languages. The knowledge of language cannot be denied as crucial as other branches of knowledge. Hence, in this blog, we are trying our best to relate the linguistic knowledge, specifically Discourse Analysis with the Islamization of knowledge to open the eyes of people that we should be guided by Islam in everything we do. Before going further, we would like to define what is actually discourse analysis?

Discourse Analysis is a general term for a number of approaches to analyze written, vocal, or sign language use or any significant semiotic event (Wikipedia). Discourse refers to “actual instance of communication in the medium of language” (Jonestone, 2002). The study of discourse is growing day by day and many interested topics related to discourse have been introduced.

Why did we choose Discourse Analysis?

Dear readers,
As we know, Allah asks us to learn the language to propagate the teaching of Islam. Language must be used in parallel to Islamic teaching to produce the modern educated Muslims who will eventually bring great contributions to Islam.  Discourse analysis as a mean of language study has put its interest in studying the relation of discourse and the world. Hence, it involves the process of shaping our minds and worldviews. For instance, we can use our knowledge of discourse to influence other people’s views regarding Islam since the misconception of Islam is actually rooted down from the mass media and writing materials. Islamic writing for instance can help in encountering the spread of Islamophobia in most of the Western countries.

Besides, the knowledge of discourse structure such as turn-taking, cohesion, plot and coherence will help us in organizing our discourse. Hence, this is very much related to Islam since it asks us to be clear in spreading its messages. A good da’i should portray noble values by using appropriate intonation, speech act, gestures and strategies in his/her preaching method in order to attract people to Islam. We learn that discourse analysis also touches on the social role in relation to discourse role. Islam teaches us to act accordingly with our roles. Parents, for, instance, have to play their responsibilities in giving advises to their children. Here, we can see that our discourse should be in accordance with our social role.

We believe our effort to relate the study of Discourse Analysis with Islam is a good attempt to convey the basic teaching of Islam in studying a language. Thus, we create this blog with the intention to make people ponder on the Islamization of knowledge which Insya-Allah can bring us to the true Islamic teaching and knowledge.
